Keeping indoor air clean is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoke exposure.

Choose one room where you can focus on keeping air cleaner:

  • Close windows and doors
  • Seal obvious gaps if you can
  • Spend more time in this room during heavy smoke event

Air Cleaners

  • Portable air cleaners with HEPA filters can help remove smoke particles
  • Try to match the unit to the room size – manufactures will typically state whether it is for a small, medium or large room.
  • Avoid devices that produce ozone

DIY Box Fan Filter

A box fan filter is a low-cost way to improve indoor air:

  • Use a standard 20”square box fan
  • Attach a 20×20” MERV-13 filter; this is equivalent to a HEPA-rated filter.  Make sure it matches the shape and size of your box fan and the filter is pointed in the direction of air flow. You can use duct tape or a bungee cord to attach the filter.
  • Make sure airflow is unobstructed and follow safety guidelines
  • Replace every 1-3 months or when the filter appears dirty

Cleaner Air & Smoke Relief Spaces

When smoke is heavy, public cleaner air spaces can offer relief.

These may include:

  • Libraries
  • Community centers
  • Cooling centers
  • Other public buildings designated during smoke events
